forumify Development Log - July 2024
Hello, forumify community!
We're super excited to share a big update this month.
Big Update: forumify cloud Released!
We are extremely happy to announce the release of forumify cloud! forumify cloud provides small to medium communities with an effortless way to host their forumify instance on forumify.net infrastructure, essentially offering "Forums As A Service".
You can find more information on the getting started page. Additionally, you can request a demo, which gives you 6 hours to explore a real forumify instance and even test out some plugins. If you own a larger community, and would like to prepare your instance before switching over, please reach out and we can assist you in setting up your instance on a temporary domain before going live.
Support System in Development
We're currently working on a support system for forumify cloud that would plug straight into your forum. In the meantime, you can ask any generic questions in the Technical Support forum. For cloud-related issues, we've temporarily added a Discord bot to assist. For bugs or platform improvements, please use the issue tracker on GitHub.
New Theme System
We've added a theme system that allows theme creators to share their themes with other forums. Installing a theme is as straightforward as installing any other plugin. Themes also come with their own configuration options, enabling admins to set their house style on any theme they install. Each theme can have both light and dark modes. If a theme includes these modes, users will see a theme selector icon in the top right corner. In fact, the base forumify theme now also has a dark theme. So go ahead and try it out by clicking the light/dark mode button on the top right! (only available on desktop, on first visit, the preferred theme is automatically detected by your browser)
Road to Version 1.0.0
While we haven't released a full "version 1" yet, we are quite close. To reiterate: v1 won't bring major changes from what we have today. Assigning a major version simply creates a contract between us and plugin developers, stating that any changes we make to the platform won't entirely break plugins. This follows the Semantic Versioning (semver) system, where:
Major versions introduce changes that might break compatibility.
Minor versions add functionality in a backwards-compatible manner.
Patch versions include backwards-compatible bug fixes.
Changes to Dev Logs
Dev logs are changing. Instead of posting a monthly dev log, we'll most likely just post smaller updates about specific features. This will make the dev logs more concrete, covering only items that are ready for you to explore and less spammy. Additionally, we won't tag everyone on Discord every month but will reserve that for major milestones. If you want to be kept up to date with platform developments, subscribe to the developer updates forum.
Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm as we move closer to this significant milestone.
Stay tuned for more updates, and don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or suggestions.
